Coolest Homemade Mad Hatter Costume

Alice in Wonderland characters are always a good go-to for a Halloween costume. But you just can’t go with a run-of-the-mill Wonderland costume if you want to impress; you have to create a really good one. I decided to base my costume on both the new Johnny Depp version of the Mad Hatter and the old school Disney animated Mad Hatter.

I had inherited, in the past, a 1970s purple tuxedo jacket and I remodeled it to look more like a Victorian dinner jacket. I then added paisley-patterned cuffs to it. I found the plaid pants and vest at a thrift store. The tie was made from some spare fabric I found and I sewed lace to the cuffs of an old white button-up shirt I had.

To “top” it all off, I got a black top hat and white wig. The Mad Hatter’s signature “In the style of 10/6” card is in the band of the hat. Black and white socks completed the Homemade Mad Hatter Costume.

Needless to say, after all that work, I was ready for a cup of tea!
