Coolest Homemade Marge and Homer Simpson Couples Costume

This Marge and Homer Simpson Couples Costume was my boyfriend and my couples costume in 2009. He decided that we would be Marge and Homer Simpson, but it was up to me to actually make the costumes!

How I did it…

Marge Simpson Costume:
Hair: An old foam egg-crate mattress topper (the kind with the dimples) sewn into a tube and spray painted blue. A mixing bowl was used on the top to keep it even to patch and sew the rounded top portion (like how you use a sock darner). Single stitches around the face portion were done on the edge of the foam to create the curls around the face (blue spray paint for foam & other surfaces, $3 at WalMart). To me, this gave the best results for cartoony looking hair vs the cotton balls/polyfil glued to a posterboard technique I’ve seen. Not to mention it was comfortable and lightweight to wear. I was frequently asked where I bought my hair!
Necklace: 12 ping pong balls strung together with elastic and spray painted red. (Ping pong balls $2 at iParty, Red spray paint for plastic & other surfaces, $3 at WalMart).
Shoes: Ballerina flats on clearance at Walmart for $5 and spray painted red with the same paint as the ping pong balls.
Eyes: Kids geek glasses/clown nose kit from Dollar Tree ($1). Pop the lenses out of the frames, cut the nose in half, make holes in the center, hot glue the half spheres to the base of the glasses, paint white with black pupils, hot glue on curled black craft pipe-cleaners for Marge’s eyelashes. The ear pieces broke of course since they were designed for a kid so I threaded elastic to hold them up kind of like goggles.
Legs: Yellow footless tights from Target ($5) that I purposely bought a size too big so I could sew the toes and make into footed tights.
Arms: Ladies yellow long sleeve shirt from Old Navy ($8).
Hands: Yellow ladies knit gloves from Dollar Tree ($1).
Face: Bright yellow face paint from iParty ($2).
Dress: Left over from a costume a couple years ago!

Homer Simpson Costume:
Hair: Yellow swim cap from eBay ($3 with free shipping) with bent black craft pipe cleaners taped to it once it was on.
Eyes: Kids geek glasses/clown nose kit from Dollar Tree ($1). Pop the lenses out of the frames, cut the nose in half, make holes in the center, hot glue the half spheres to the base of the glasses, paint white with black pupils. The ear pieces broke of course since they were designed for a kid so I threaded elastic to hold them up kind of like goggles.
Face: Bright yellow face paint from iParty ($2), black eyeliner ($1), and the darkest liquid foundation on the shelf from Dollar Tree ($1).
Arms: Ladies yellow long sleeve shirt from Old Navy ($8).
Hands: Yellow cotton work gloves from Dollar Tree ($1).
Shirt: Plain white polo from Old Navy ($5 on sale!).
Belly: My JUNO costume belly I had made from last year.
Pants: Blue jeans he already owned.
Shoes: Loafers he already owned.
Uranium Stick from the Nuclear Power Plant: Glowstick from CVS ($1).
Beer bottles & box: One of my Homers’ favorite beers… a Sam Adams Octoberfest 6-pack with the Duff Beer Logo sized and taped to fit (surprisingly, easily found off dsgallery’s wordpress blog). (So just the cost of the beer!)

Total Cost of both costumes together: $52
[$30 for Marge, $22 for Homer]

If anyone attempts to recreate this, I must warn you that spray painting the foam took the majority of time over the month it took to prepare these costumes. The paint would absorb into the foam, need time to dry, and then require several more coats of paint. However, to this date, this has been our most favorite couples costume we have ever done.

We were a huge hit at both the parties we went to! And we were surprised when at the second party we bumped into Duff Man!
