With this Homemade Mermaid Costume I cut strips of fabric in all the colors of the rainbow for the scales and finished the edges with fabric glue. I used a stretchy fitted skirt underneath to sew it to. I wanted my legs to be water so I have blue waves on my shows with sequence and beads for bubbles and shells in the water waves. I painted the shoes with shimmery metallic light blue powder paint. I have blue tights with ruffles on the ankle to be like water waves and rhinestones for bubbles. (I also have a pair of knee socks (not in picture but in drawings) that have bubbles printed on them and are warmer for the October air. It took forever to pleat and ruffle the shear purple ribbon above the bust. I just hand sewed it an each pleat. I painted a plastic starfish I got in California light purple to match the color scheme. I dangled shimmery fabric in waves below the bust.
This one was a lot of fun to make.
I think this costume looks really nice. I wouldn’t mind if my child wanted to wear it. I don’t like gross costumes or commercial film stuff or anything racy. I might try this next year if the young’s are interested. Maybe I will make one and see if they like it. Good job!
