Coolest Homemade Moulin Rouge Burlesque Dancer Costume

I’ve always had a fascination with burlesque and decided to try to glam it up one year with a friend. I don’t like the idea of women dressing up in vulgar costumes so, if I wanted to be sexy, it would have to be legit and “classy”. That year I decided to be a Moulin Rouge Burlesque Dancer.

I knew I wanted a feather bouffant derrière, so bought 2 boas and safety-pinned them to a corset I borrowed from a friend. I also couldn’t find ruffled panties at the time (this came into style the following year, of course!) so bought boy cut panties and layered them with a lace pair.

I laced in some red ribbon to the corset, glued on some extremely long eyelashes, sported some dramatic makeup, finger-waved my hair (not in this picture though) and adorned several pearl necklaces and bracelets. A Victorian choker would work well also. Stockings are a must as well; in my opinion, vertical striped ones would have been better but I couldn’t find any at the time. I also wore long satin gloves.

It was a lot of fun making this Homemade Moulin Rouge Burlesque Dancer Costume, and I got my boyfriend to sport a suit, a tie and a fedora hat.

  1. Looks good, but I tried and failed :(

Instead I bought a lovely one from Buffies website, they had a wide range and they also made to my size and colour… and it was better than me sewing my fingers to the feathers!!
