After weeks of debate, my husband and I finally agreed on the perfect “couple” costume – Homemade Mr. and Mrs. Garden Gnome Costumes. We had an absolute blast making our costumes together too!
Our costume-making adventure began with a trip to the local second-hand stores where we found the base outfits. For me – a red jumper, bright blue turtleneck, and a curtain for an apron. For him – a pair of (ladies!) red pants, a bright blue turtleneck, and a (ladies!) green robe cut into a tunic.
Next, we headed to the fabric store for items to adorn our costumes – fabric paint, stencils, and ribbon to finish the apron; black vinyl stitched together to make a vest and belt; lace trim for the jumper collar; and big, bold buttons to add a punch of fun. We made our hats out of poster board covered with red felt.
My husband made our reversible signs out of foam board – “Welcome” and “Trick” or “Treat” – secured by a paint stir stick. We completed the look with white wigs, his beard and pipe, boot covers, and a little makeup.
