This homemade Mystique from X-Men costume took us about a week to complete. We went to different dance stores looking for a navy blue leotard but no one had one in the store; we ended up buying a beige one and dyed it navy blue. We used fabric paint to make Mystique’s skin pattern. Each day we would do a side and let it dry overnight. I used the same fabric paint to do the skin patterns on my face.
We bought a wig that most closely resembled Mystique’s hair. We then cut it, put glue on it to give it the wet look, used part of the hair that we cut to make the triangular shape on my forehead and glued it on. We bought a reddish spray paint at Home Depot and sprayed the wig to give it color.
We cut the breast area of the leotard to give it a naked look. I used body spray paint on my face, feet, hands, breast, neck and back. I used the same fabric paint on my breast to give it the 3D skin pattern look. I bought yellow contacts online and spray-painted a pair of high heels with the same color I used on my body so that everything would look the same.
In the pictures the leotard looks lighter but that’s because of the flash. I honestly looked as if I was naked. I got a lot of compliments. Everyone wanted a picture with me, it was a lot of fun.
This has to be the best costume i have seen of mystique! it looks like a lot of work. very creative… love it. thanks for sharing with us.
