Coolest Homemade Nightmare Before Christmas Sally Adult Halloween Costume

This is the Nightmare Before Christmas Sally Adult Halloween Costume I made for myself in 2008. It started with a dress found on clearance for $10 that could be used as a base. The outer portion of the dress is made of coarse burlap “borrowed” from my office. Each piece was cut to shape then hand dyed with various fabric dyes from the local fabric store. Each piece was sewn on first with needle and thread then finished with hand sewn black yarn. Black sharpie marker was the finishing touch used for drawing the pattern on the burlap.

The work in progress was on a dress form making the construction much easier. The burlap was difficult to work with, glue had to be applied to the edges so it wouldn’t unravel and the sleeve ripped halfway through the party. Oopsie.
I made the wig with a few hues of red yarn sewn onto a spandex swimming cap. The yarn was wound around a large chair back, taped in a single row and then sewn together. Each layer of hair was spaced about 3” apart and sewn onto the swimming cap. It held really well.

The stitches on my arms? That is Elmer’s glue, black yarn and cocktail hour. It was meant to be applied with skin in a bottle from the Halloween store but the product I bought was so old it was just a big clump of over priced flesh-toned latex. That’s why homemade it best!

  1. I have been wanting to be Sally for Halloween again (I was her for Halloween when I was about 8 years old) for many years now. However, I’ve been too intimidated by making the dress, since I don’t want to buy one. Your ideas should help me for making it happen next year. :) Also, I think this is one of the best Sally costumes I’ve seen on-line. Kudos!
