I wanted to do something unique for my son before he gets old enough to pick out his own costumes. Almost everyone has seen Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and it is one of our favorite movies. I thought the homemade Oompa Loompa costume would be fun and cute. We also did not see any other Oompa Loompas running around, making him the subject of many photos!
I bought a white turtleneck and dyed it brown, painting the stripes on the neck and wrists. I painted brown stripes on white tights and used a pair of white sweat pants. I had to put a rubber band around the ankle and push the legs up. I also stuffed burp cloths in the sides of the legs to make them stick out a little. I used white dress-up gloves. The straps were a large pair of girls white tights.
I cut the legs apart and safety pinned them on the inside, attaching brown felt circles to the front and back as well. I bought white pompoms and painted brown spirals on them. I used Velcro dots to attach them to the shoes. I bought a green wig and tried to spray paint it darker, but it didn’t work out so well. It was also not possible to style it. But, it worked. I used regular face paint.
This homemade Oompa Loompa costume was definitely a crowd favorite and now I’m hard pressed to come up with something to top it.
Too cute! Great job! Love the details…
Perfect! I give kids with homemade costumes extra candy. I’d have given this little dude a forklift full of sweets! :D
