When I was invited to a 1970s party, I knew I wanted something different but couldn’t find well made Oompa Loompa outfits online or in the party hire shops. So I made my own Homemade Oompa Loompa Girl Costume!
I made the skirt and suspenders out of a long white skirt, cut short, and two belts from some 3/4 length pants, and some green buttons. I made the top from an old ugly skivvy, which I hand sewed white ribbon onto the cuffs and collar.
I found the wig for $10 at a bargain shop, and curled it myself and the gloves were $1! I put ribbons on my shoes, and bought brown stockings and $3 white glasses like the ones the Oompa Loompas wear in the TV scene!!
BUT the part that got the most attention was my last minute decision to make a bag, the night before the party! I bought felt in brown, red, yellow and white, printed out a tiny photo of a Wonka Bar, then copied it onto felt, and made a bag by machine sewing two bits of brown felt together! I put on my left over white ribbon and two more green buttons and waa laaaa! I had my own Wonka Bar bag! I printed Golden Tickets, took a giant lollipop and away I went.
Everyone loved it and kept asking where I got my outfit, and were stunned when I said I made it. I also won Best Dressed, and got a movie voucher! WOO! The birthday girl was born in the year Willy Wonka first came out, so she was really happy to see an Oompa Loompa at her party!!!
Hope you enjoy the pics.
