The inspiration for my Homemade Oompa Loompa Halloween Costume came from when I grew out my hair in college. A girl told me, “Don’t take this the wrong way, but when your hair gets long it flips out, and it would make for an AWESOME Oopma-Loompa costume!” The seed was planted, and I took the idea by storm.
My grandmother helped me make the costume, sewing white shoelaces onto the brown turtleneck to create stripes, and provided the huge brown buttons for my overalls. (She had never heard of the movie though, and kept calling me a loopy-doopy). Other items that helped the costume along were white gloves, striped socks, but the most necessary component was definitely the brown turtleneck.
To make the crossing overall straps, we just took fabric from a thick white shirt and sewed them into long strips (with button holes for those wonderful brown buttons). Growing my hair out took a few months of commitment, but it was definitely worth it to not have to wear a scratchy wig! The costume was a huge success, winning me two costume contests. In hindsight, this costume might be even better if you have a tall friend to dress as Willy Wonka himself, but for me I was content without Willy because I was giving out Wonka candy, singing songs, and doing miniature cartwheels all night long!
Oompa-loompa, doopity, dawesome. Nice job, Ed H, your costume is AWESOME!
Oompa loompas scare the you-know-what out of me, but I have to admit, that is by far the coolest costume I have ever seen! AMAZING!
