Being a big man it is hard to find unique costumes for my husband. My son really loved Transformers and wanted Daddy to be Optimus Prime. So I put this Homemade Optimus Prime Halloween Costume together for him. It turned out so good that people stopped us in the middle of the street so they could get pictures of Optimus with their children.
Most of the items I used my husband found at work. It was a lot of different sized boxed, and Styrofoam used for packing computers. It was rather difficult to paint the cardboard (even with cardboard paint) so I covered everything first in fabric ( red and blue) then painted over it with metallic cardboard paint.
For the helmet I used a kids play batters helmet, covered that with foam to form the helmet, cover it with fabric and painted it as well. The gas tanks were simply 2 soda bottles covered in tin foil and the tail pipes were paper towel holders cover in foil.
To make the pieces fit together and make it easy to get on and move I made openings but used Velcro to make it look like it was all one piece.
I probably spent 40 dollars on fabric, paint, glue and Velcro. It took about 2 weeks to make. I worked on a little each night.
