This is how I made our Homemade Outer Space Family Halloween Costume. I got 3 large 36 inch balloons and paper mached them for the earth, moon and sun. I let them sit for a couple of days so that everything was dry.
For the moon, I added craters. I popped the balloons and painted each one. The kids helped me with the sun and moon but the earth was too tricky. I cut arm, head and leg holes in all three. I outlined the earth with puffy paint. I painted each one with glow in the dark paint. I hot glued miniature astronauts to the back of the moon. I used sticky back yellow felt for sun’s headband and cut yellow foam for the sun and glued it all around.
I bought the astronauts helmet and boots. My husband brought home a chemical suit from work and I used fabric paint for the NASA sign and flag. I was the shooting star. I just covered a cardboard star with tinfoil and hot glued stars all over my shirt. It was a blast making the costumes and we are already thinking for next year.
My 5 year old wants to be the sun this year for Halloween, and I love your idea. I do have a question, though. How did the kids get into the costumes?
I love your hat. I’m having a pep rally space themed and I was wondering how did you keep the star on your head without falling??
I’m interested in buying your space helmet if you don’t plan to use it again. Will pay top dollar. If you ever decide to sell it please contact me. hallokitee@gmail.com
