My boyfriend and I always try to come up with a couples themed costume. We love making our own costumes because they always end up better than anything you can buy in the store. Originality and creativity go a long way. After a year of brainstorming, I was finally inspired by a vintage souvenir plate of Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox, Babe. As Minnesotans we wanted to honor a famous legend which originated close to home.
I decided to make the blue ox a literal “babe” so I chose to wear a dress, making her of the female persuasion. I made the ears and tail out of blue fleece material and my hooves and horns were yellow felt. I painted a plastic cow nose blue and added the gold nose ring. For additional authenticity I hung a real bell around my neck. Since he couldn’t actually be a giant lumberjack my boyfriend decided it would be funny if at least his ax could be. He made the oversized ax himself from a cardboard tube and cut and pasted cardboard pieces together, painting it red and silver, just like Paul’s.
