I had wanted to be a peacock for Halloween for YEARS. The tail was of course the most challenging part. I bought the feathers over the course of several weeks from Micheal’s with weekly coupons. I bought the fabric from Joann’s, the belt was one I had for years, the grommets in them were crucial.
I hand sewed each feather to one piece of fabric. At the bottom middle, there were three large grommets that attached to the belt. After all the feathers were sewn on, I sewed a matching piece of fabric to it so all my work didn’t show on the back. The tail stood up with two dowels inside the tail with part of a clothes hanger for support and the black strings to keep them forward. The Strings can also be dropped so the tail hangs behind.
The pictures of my Homemade Peacock Costume don’t do the costume justice, it’s much more impressive in person. Many weeks of work, but it’s a piece I’ll keep forever.
