My inspiration for this Homemade Peacock Costume was Victoria’s Secret 2007 fashion show. Heidi Klum wore a giant silver snowflake, which opened up as she walked down the runway. I am also a huge bird lover.. macaws, parakeets, owls, crows… any cutie with feathers…oaaohh I just can’t explain! So I thought it would be perfect to combine the size/mechanism of the snowflake costume with the colors and boldness of a peacock.
The costume took about a month to make, completely by hand. I started with a welded copper wire fan frame, then sewed on the green spandex base fabric. Got 100 real peacock feathers and hot-glued them to the green fabric. Then glued blue sequins fabric strips and circles to add more pattern.
As a finishing touch, I airbrushed the white feather stems a metallic turquoise and glued rhinestones all over. I also wired in a pulling mechanism to open and close the tail by rope. The bodysuit was originally white but I dyed it blue and added rhinestones. Gloves were white but I airbrushed them turquoise.
Have a great Halloween!
Here is a YouTube video of the costume in action :)
Can anyone give me a more detailed explanation of how to make this, time is not an issue I just need more instruction. Thank you.
Can you explain how to “rig” the string to make the retractable peacock fan?
