I have two boys who I love to dress alike for Halloween. I didn’t want to buy the same costume from Wal-mart. I dug in my closet and got all the old shirts that I never wore and transformed them into pirates clothes. The boots I made from felt, I just constructed them to look like high boots, and sewed them to the pants.
All of the material I either had laying around the house or I used clothes from my closet. I even took leather shoe strings from an old pair of shoes to use fro the ties. The captain’s shirt started out white and I soaked it in tea bags to give it an old, antique look. I did have to shorten the sleeves and add the puffy part around his wrists.
The red striped shirt started as a turtle neck. I just cut open the neck line, shortened it a little and cut up the bottom to make it looked ragged. We did purchase the swords and pirated earrings from the store but all the rest was made at home.
We had a great time going around the neighborhood in our Homemade Pirate Halloween Costumes and everyone thought they looked adorable. I really enjoy making crafts and think it is way more fun to make something original than buying the same costume that everyone else is wearing.
Thank you for the photo of your homemade costumes. I also have two boys and we are going to a pirate party. I did not want to spend much money on costumes. This idea seems simple yet very unique! Thank you.
Thank you for your photo and ideas. I am currently making a pirate costume for my 3 year old. The only thing I am having problems with are the boots. I think I’ll try black or brown felt.
Anyhow, thanks, your kids look great!
my two grandsons are heading off for a pirate party, we found out yesterday I think, so we found an old velvet turtle neck and we are cutting the sleves off and making a v neck and since I do quilting my daughter raided my button box and found these huge ornate buttons that I was going to put on a quilt but didn’t, and they will be the captains buttons. We used old sweat pants to cut raggedy and found some black scraps for other touches and a sash of skulls and crossbones that I had in my stash of fabric, we are going to “stubble” their faces with eyeliner or brow pencil and draw a jaunty moustache on the 1 1/2 year old, and off they sail. we are using your ideas and changing them a bit for what we could find.
