I made these Popeye and Olive Oyl couple costumes, using the Popeye movie with Shelley Duvall and Robin Williams as my inspiration. I thought the more old school they looked, the more interesting the costume.
My favorite part of the costume were the shoes on Olive Oyl. I felt they were key to making the costume authentic. I also loved the beer cozies, made from spinach cans and daisies.
Popeye’s arms were made out of nylons and quilt stuffing. I made his shoes with duck tape, brown cloth sewn together and gold buttons with ribbon. The pants were from Dickies and his shirt was hand-made. I removed the gold rope and anchor from his sailor cap and sewed on a piece of white material instead.
I also made a Sweet Pea costume which was a little sack with a white ruffle and a sailor cap.
We received many compliments on our costumes and were told how perfect we were for these characters.
Adorable. Where did you get the shoes? They do look authentic.
Thanks.
