I have never sewed anything more than some quilts, but this wasn’t too bad!
You’ll need:
– blue nylon fabric
– white fabric
– any metal ring (I used plastic ones found in the purse making section of my fabric store)
– blonde wig
– black hat
– knee high boots or shoe covers
– big black purse
– red jacket
It sounds like a lot of materials, but I borrowed a lot from a friend so they weren’t all new investments.
For this homemade Pretty Woman Halloween costume idea I started with the skirt. For this I suggest a knit or nylon (anything stretchy, it doesn’t have to be perfectly sewn if it’s stretchy). I started by making the sides completely boxy and parallel and then altered it to fit me. I then folded it in half to cut the outside edges.
The top was not quite as easy… I made a standard tank-top and again just altered it where needed. the hard part is getting it to fit at the bottom as it tended to want to stick away from the body. I ended up sewing myself into it while it was on my body :/ I think inserting a zipper or velcro would fix this problem.
I then attached the two parts with a ring in the front and the back.
For the boots I purchased shoe covers for $20 that are meant to go over top of your own shoes. The feet part looked really funny so I cut the feet off and wore them with my black ankle boots (wear black socks too, because some skin will show at the ankle). This worked really well… no one even noticed.
I had to cut the bangs in the wig, but that was pretty easy. Then top it off with a hat!!
Add a bunch of bangle bracelets, big hoop earrings, and a key on a string and you’re set!
Finishing touches: A safety pin at the top of the boot because “You make $100 an hour and you have a safety pin holding your boot up?”
I also pinned a couple condoms hanging out the top of the boot, because “I got red, I got green, I got yellow… I’m out of purple, but I do have one Gold Circle coin left… the condom of champions… the one and only… nothin’ is gettin’ through this sucker. Whaddya say, hmm?” :)
I also partnered a big black purse with a red jacket draping over it, just like in the movie.
Overall this is my favorite costume ever! I felt like a celebrity all night long, taking pictures with random people and getting lots of compliments. You could even have a friend dress up as Kit De Luca, or even Edward.
