We had so much fun with this Homemade R2D2 Costume. My son wore a white sweatshirt and sweatpants underneath. The body of the costume is a white Rubber Maid trash can. The lid is painted with a high shine silver spray paint and allowed to dry. Then the lid is taped so that the swinging door no longer swings.
On the inside of the lid I hot glued a foam circle for comfort. Before putting the can together arm holes need to be cut out of the side. After you cut the arm holes you can hot glue the can and lid together. The detail on the can and lid were done by looking at a R2D2 action figure. I used silver flashing tape and blue painters tape as well as colored electrical tape for the detail.
I used an exacto knife to cut the tape where necessary. R2D2’s arms are upholstery foam covered in white fabric . Although you can’t see them in the picture they have tape details on the side as well. The arms are attached to lid with a thick elastic band around where the trash can lid and body meet.
While this costume is great for indoor parties or contests it is not good for trick or treating because the child can’t see side to side very well. It took about 6 hours to complete this project from start to finish.
