My 11 year old son really lived the character of this Homemade Richard Simmons Halloween Costume and made it super fab! He had an absolute ball playing the part of Richard Simmons.
I bought red/white striped material($5) and a friend made the shorts in a couple of hours. The wig I purchased at K-Mart ($3); it was a huge Afro that I trimmed to ‘Richard-size hair’, saving the trimmings for chest hair, armpit hair and back hair, which I glued on to my son with eyelash adhesive($2).
The tank was a basic white tank of my daughter’s on which I used standard fabric glue($2) to write “SWEAT IT OUT” and covered in red glitter($2). The same technique was used for his sweatband($1) with a peace sign.
The costume was completed with “slouch” socks and vintage-style Nikes that we already owned.
My son made the outfit come alive with his interpretation of Richard Simmons by yelling “Feel the burn, Ladies, and Work it Honey” as he exercised.
By far THE best costume we have ever done!!!
Total cost $15.00
