My children decided they wanted the family to do the Wizard of OZ theme this year for Halloween. After checking out store bought costumes I decided I could make a much better homemade Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz costume for a much cheaper price.
I used an old pair of brown pants and an old flannel shirt turned inside out. Since real straw would have been too itchy I purchase Raffia from the floral department at Walmart. I sewed the Raffia to elastic then sewed it onto the shirt so that it looked like straw was hanging out. I also purchased material from Walmart that looks like natural burlap.
Next I cut out a hole for her face and sewed a small piece of rope around the neck area that gave it a cinched up look. This way she did not have to tie a rope around her neck. Then I lined it with a soft material so that it would not be too itchy. I also sewed rope around both wrists, both ankles and the waist area.
I finished it up with a black hat that we had from a past Halloween costume and tied rope around the hat. She loved her homemade Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz costume and all the comments she got about it when she went out trick or treating.
