Using photos of an actual sock monkey for inspiration, this Homemade Sock Monkey Halloween Costume is made out of two women’s long sleeve shirts. For the body of the costume I used a shirt that was a few inches past crotch level in length. I cut the sleeves off a larger shirt and sewed them to the bottom of the other shirt, with the shoulders of the sleeves coming together in the middle to make the crotch of the costume.
I put a 7 inch zipper in the back of the shirt so that the child could step into it. I used red and white felt to make the butt and hand sewed it onto the costume. I used the body of the shirt that I had cut the sleeves off of to make a tail and the head.
For the tail I stuffed it with poly-fil and sewed part of a child’s sock to the tip, then safety pinned it to the butt of the costume. I used a stocking cap as a pattern to make the head out of the leftover shirt material and stuffed it with poly-fil to make it stand up. I made ears out of the same material, stuffed with a bit of poly-fill, and hand sewed to the head. For the nose/mouth, I made a fist-size pillow out of the same material, sewed red and white felt on for the mouth then hand sewed the whole piece to the head. I used big black buttons for the eyes. The hat on the monkey is just a baby’s knit hat from the dollar store.
We finished with men’s white socks put over the child’s shoes.
