I love making my kid’s costumes. Even though they are young and barely wear them for 2 hours, I can easily spend 5-6 hours minimum to make one. I wanted something fun and cute for one of my 18 month old twins, whom I often call my little monkey. He’s often all over the place, jumping and climbing (just to say he was supposed to be affected by cerebral palsy… he’s definitely not!). I have always loved sock monkeys so I decided to try and have a go at making a sock monkey costume.
I went out and bought an 8 pack of men’s work socks and a one-piece long pajama with snaps in the crotch. It cost me about 15$ in all with the red felt. I then laid the socks out on the onesie to see how I would have to sew them. I cut up my socks, trying to keep the ribbing vertically so that the costume would have some stretch. After sewing all my pieces together, I did a test run on my son to check the fit. Made a hat with the remaining socks, a tail and hand-sewed the costume to the onesie, leaving the snaps uncovered so that diaper changes would be easy. He was so adorable with his red bum and tail hanging to the ground. Not to mention the hat, which he insisted on keeping on all evening even though he was in his pjs.
It’s far from perfect, but it’s perfectly him.
