This year, I decided I wanted to dress up with a group and it came down to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Group Costume. This website is my favorite website to find amazing homemade costumes, so I searched and gathered all the ideas and added my own ideas to come up with the simplest way to make our costumes. The whole fit consists of a dress, tights (bought), shell, weapon, and mask.
Need:
-green stretchy fabric
-yellow felt
Being a group of girls, I simply made green tube dresses. I took green stretchy fabric and wrapped it around each person. Pinned the dress down to her shape and then sewed it using a sewing machine. I used stretchy fabric so that it would be easy to slip in and out of the dresses, but it made it harder to sew; I used zig zag stitching for this. Some wore long-sleeved shirts under the dress because it was a chilly night. I then used yellow felt to make the abs. We cut each ab piece separately and used fabric glue to glue them on each dress as the person had it on. Six pieces in total per person.
Need:
-green & brown felt
-green fabric (not stretchy)
-aluminum tray
For the shell, we got everyone an aluminum tray used for turkeys, since it’s already oval in shape. We popped the aluminum trays out to make the shape rounder. Then, I made 4 holes on the sides of the tray, two on the top and two on the bottom, to create openings for my straps. I used green fabric, cut into long 1” wide straps and tied them onto the shell. (it should be backpack-like) After, I used green felt to cover the aluminum shell, hot gluing it on. Everyone got to design their own shell to show our individuality. We used green fabric and brown felt to design (hot & fabric glued everything down).
Need:
-brown felt
-red, light blue, orange, green and lavender fabric
-orange, light blue, red, and lavender felt sheets (8 1/2” x 11” just one of each)
-green tights
Using the brown felt and the felt sheets according to our character colors, we made belts (about 1 1/2” wide). We safety pinned the belt together to easily take them off later. The masks we made (using the felt sheets) were taped to our face and surprisingly, the tape lasted all night. As for the scraps of strings tied onto the arms and knee-areas, we use the colored fabric accordingly. We wore green tights from Target ($5 each). Shoes, our own. Weapons bought and found separately.
We were a hit! A lady even took pictures of us because she wanted to she her granddaughter, an 18 year old fan of TMNT. It was a fun night. Turtles out!
