The Homemade Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Group Costume was in full effect Halloween 2009. They were accompanied by April the reporter and a member of the Foot Clan. As you can see, no detail was spared as we even had the accessories to go along with the costumes. We even had a girl Ninja Turtle wearing pink.
The costumes took about two weeks of hard work to make, even with about seven people working on them. Perhaps the best part about the costume was the shells and chest plates, which I have sent additional pictures to show. They were made using cardboard templates, and filled with foam batting. We used chalk to detail the abs. The shells were actually attached by elastic to our front plates, making it easy to slip our shells off and on.
All of the bands were cut from material from each of the different turtles’ color. We dyed two pairs of plain white tights dark green with Rit dye, tearing one of them down the middle to use for slipping on our upper bodies. We purchased plain brown slippers for our feet, and black fingerless gloves for our hands. The shorts were boxer-like, we just cut up the bottoms. Both the gloves and our shorts were only a dollar each.
The costumes roughly cost us only $50 each when we totaled everything out. We wouldn’t recommend trying to make costumes like these without the help of someone with a sowing/arts and crafts background. We really lucked out with having some talented people work on them.
Where did you get the turtle shells
