This Homemade Voodoo Doll Costume works great for Mardi Gras too. Start with a black turtleneck and black tights (better if they’re ripped), add a short skirt and over that a raffia hula skirt. Sew on big “glow in the dark” beads, plastic bugs and snakes, large safety pins, and large sequins made out of the Mylar linings of potato chip bags glued to cardboard.
Put black raffia through a toilet paper tube and attach to a hair band. Wrap a piece of crushed velvet around your head to create a turban with the raffia sticking out the top. Put white battery-operated lights around your neck and red lights in the raffia hair. You can hide the hair light batteries in the turban and the white light batteries in the turtleneck.
Pile plastic Mardi Gras necklaces over the lights around your neck. Put white makeup on your face, black out your eyes and draw black stitches over your mouth. Optional is a large fake safety pin through the nose. If you like, you can also add skeleton gloves. The voodoo needles are made from “arrows through the head”. Remove the arrowheads and spray the shafts silver and insert three inch white Styrofoam balls on the ends. One needle goes “through” your head the others “through” your body.
This costume is great at night. The transparent Mardi Gras beads light up and create an eerie glow on your face, and the red lights in the raffia hair will trail behind you.
