I’ve always been a fan of WTWTA, but when I saw the trailer with one of my favorite Arcade Fire song’s playing I was enchanted! So months ago I started planning how to make the Homemade Where the Wild things Are Max and Carol Costumes. I searched all over the internet for photos and ideas. Do you realize how impossible it is to find good info on fur dress making on the net?
Anyway, I first made the headpiece from paper mache on a pot with playdough then started with felting and pinning. I worked and reworked the headpiece until 5:30 am on the day of Halloween. The Max costume was the first sewing project I’ve done which I didn’t tear apart and redo over and over! I was really happy with how it turned out, as was my husband, but I think he just liked how cozy it was. He made the crown and wand himself and was very proud of that!
The skirt I am wearing started as a dress and, when I squeezed into it, I realized I needed to make alterations. So, at 5:00 pm the night before Halloween, I started adding felt ‘scale’ inserts to the newly chopped-off dress, added a waistband but felt it still needed something more. The arm and legwarmers had already been completed some days before.
I was browsing the net when I found the most lovely painting on etsy.com of a Wild Thing claw picking up the boat with Max in it. I immediately knew the felt version of that was the ticket so off to felt-cutting heaven.
I’m really proud of how it turned out but, next year, I may be buying readymade costumes.
