After seeing the movie Up when it came out on DVD sometime around November 2009, I knew that I was going dress in a House and Carl Fredricksen From Pixar’s UP DIY Costume the following Halloween. I started making the costume in September this year and it took me up until the day before my school’s Senior Dress Up day on October 29th to complete it.
The costume itself was fairly easy to make. The only supplies I used were cardboard, hot glue, duct tape, some dowels, toothpicks, paint and colored pencils. I first built the house using cardboard and an exacto knife to cut each piece of the house, then assembled them using the duct tape and glue. I used acrylic paint to paint it and I did some detail work using colored pencils to create the shingles.
For the rest of the costume, I dressed as Carl Fredrickson, the old man from Up, by wearing some brown pants with men’s dress shoes, black suspenders, a white button up shirt, a bow-tie, and some black glasses. To finish it off I found a 4 pronged cane at the store which I put tennis balls on to look just like his cane.
My friends dressed as Russel, the boy from Up and Kevin, the bird and we won most creative for our Senior Class’s Dress Up Day.
Oh and an unfortunate note, being a costume I wore to school I wasn’t allowed latex balloons. I had to substitute Mylar for latex because non Mylar, non latex balloons don’t really exist.
As an added bonus, I “tweeted” a picture of my costume to Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers and he replied “So funny!” Which then has given the picture over 20,000 views on twitpic.
