My son Trey LOVES the pumpkin king! He has been wanting to do this Jack Skellington DIY costume for years and this was the year! He was very thrilled with the final product…
We picked up a pin-striped suit from Goodwill, which I cut to resemble a tuxedo with tails. I gathered the back and put a placard across it to tighten the front, then we shredded the back and I surged all the edges for stability (all of this was done with fabric cut from the suit, which cost $13 dollars.) Underneath, he wore a plain white t-shirt, and on his feet were his Chucks of course!
His tie was created with felt that was cut from a pattern he drew. I sewed and stuffed the bat. Then after sewing the wings, I ran wire through each of the sections to give them both stability and the ability to form them in different positions. The tie was attached to no-roll white elastic to blend with the white makeup and fastened with heavy-duty Velcro. The eyes and veining on the bat were drawn on with a white paint marker and left to dry overnight.
The big night all that was left to do was his makeup, as he didn’t want to wear a mask. The final result looked fabulous! I guess I am a little biased though…
