Easy Homemade Loofah Costume

I saw the two other loofahs on this site and started working right away on my loofah costume. However, I couldn’t find any direct instructions to make it, so I figured I’d add some of my own.

First, this is what to buy: I found a long shirt/dress a the local department store on sale for about $9. I then bought 22 yards of purple netting (the coarse kind)for $.77 a yard, a box of 200 safety pins $2, and a yard and half of thick cording at my local fabric shop $.89 a yard.

Prep: The netting was folded twice, so I left it that way and started cutting squares out. The width and height being the width of the folded material.

The assembly: I took each square and unfolded the first fold and cut at the crease. This gave me roughly 2 layers of netting that were one and a half foot each. I then took 2 layers at a time and pinned the four corners together and onto the dress, making what I called a “puff”. I did this randomly to make it look like a real loofah. For another “real” touch, I also reach into each “puff” and separated the two layers a bit to help cover any stray safety pins showing through.

All together, it took around two hours to get everything done, but definitely worth it. I went to two parties with the loofah and won most creative/most original/most purple/most awesome/most fuzzy/cleanest costume.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Total cost: approx $30
