I made this Mike Wazowski from Monsters, Inc. Costume for my nephew who loves the Monsters Inc. movie. I started with a large plastic ball that I covered with many, many layers of newspaper and brown paper bags torn into strips and soaked in Mod Podge Matte-Mat. Making sure to dry in between layers.
For the eye I cut a smaller plastic ball in half, then glued it to the larger paper mache ball stuffing the half with poly/fill to hold it’s shape. I then applied more paper mache. I used more strips of paper bag and poly/fill to sculpt the eye lids, cheeks, and lips. After it was completely dry I sanded any rough areas and brushed on more Mod Podge to seal.
I then cut out holes for arms, head, & body to fit through. After removing the deflated large ball, I painted the whole costume with acrylic craft paint in a light green. I painted in shadows and freckles in lighter and darker colors. After painting, I sprayed just the eye ball with a shiny sealer. I purchased a light green kids sweat suit that I splatter painted with freckles in dark and light colors to match.
I cut the arms of the sweat shirt off and hot glued them in the arm holes on the costume. I purchased womens gloves that I found in a similar shade of green, sewing inside the smaller finger ( Mike has 4 fingers). I stuffed poly/ fill in the fingers of the gloves and with a few hand stitches sewed in joints. And this made the gloves fit his small hands better.
With white felt and poly/fill and a few quick stitches I made horns, teeth, and claws. I glued and stitched these on gloves, slippers and costume, painted in shadows with craft paint. I covered the store bought slippers with leftover fabric from the sweat shirt glued on with hot glue, making toes with poly/fill that I attached claws too.
This costume took many days to make but it was worth it!
