First of all, I am not a seamstress by any stretch of the imagination. So, you can imagine how upset I was when my daughter, Paige, let me know that she wanted to be Mr. Potato Head for Halloween this year! My first reaction was to hit the internet! Someone had to have a costume for sale.
Well, I really didn’t want to spend a ton of money on something she would wear to a few parties and Halloween night so I started trying to figure out a way that I could make this thing instead.
I bought some stretchy brown material from the $1 a yard rack at Wal-mart, some felt for the pieces of the face, a big cloth Frisbee for the base of the hat, pillow stuffing and black poster board.
Then I blew the dust off of my sewing machine, had a friend come over and remind me of how to use it and started sewing the body together. I doubled the front and back and then sewed them together then I stuffed the front and back separately so that the stuffing wouldn’t fall out. Then Paige helped me glue all of the facial pieces on and we hot glued the hat together.
Oh, the gloves we found at a yard sale the Saturday before Halloween for a buck! Awesome find on Paige’s part!
Anyway, she won best costume at our church trunk-or–treat and we have tons of requests to borrow the costume! It was a lot of fun for Paige and for me to put this together and she was so proud when she received all of the praise for her hard work!
