Coolest Muppet Group Costume

In anticipation of the new Muppet Movie, we decided to be some of our favorite Muppets.

For Gonzo:

I simply took a football helmet and hot glued pieces of foam to it to build it up. I shaped the nose out of crumpled up newspaper wrapped in duct tape and hot glued it to the helmet. I covered it with blue felt and shaped the mouth with the foam and felt as well.

I then covered the rest of the helmet with blue fur. For the eyes, I cut about 1/3 off of the back of a styrofoam ball and covered it with white, yellow, and a little bit of brown fleece. They were then hot glued to the helmet.

As a finishing touch, I glued some feathers to the back crown of the head. For his attire, I wore a vintage, polyester suit along with one of my dad’s old bow-ties (Gonzo is always such a snazzy dresser). I also made some hands out of the blue fur and safety pinned them to the suit.

For Animal:

First I cut out a large circle out of cardboard (about 19 inches in diameter). Then I measured the circumference of my head and drew a circle that size inside the larger circle that was already cut out. I cut an “x” out of the small circle and folded the flaps up, so that the large cardboard could sit on top of my head (like a hat).

I then cut two large semi-circles out of orange felt and hot glued them around the edges of the large cardboard circle. I used fluff to stuff the semi-circles and hot glued them together so that I now had a very large orange dome shape sitting on top of my head.

To make the eyes and nose, I used Nerf balls bought at the dollar store and covered them with white and red felt respectively, and hot glued them to the dome. I then used red, pink, and orange boas for Animal’s feathers. For his expressive eyebrows, I used a black boa.

For the bottom lip, I made a tube out of orange felt and stuffed it with fluff. I hot glued the ends to the head.

For the inside of the mouth, I used a piece of black felt and a piece of pink felt for the tongue. I made sure there was a space for me to see out of. His teeth are simply made out of white felt.

For his attire, I cut an old pair of jeans in a zig-zag shape, and I happened to find an Animal shirt in a store which I also cut. I wore orange tights and an orange shirt underneath the t-shirt. His large sneakers were lent to me from a friend and the chain necklace I found in a “punk rock” store downtown. I painted a pair of gloves I had orange.

For Beaker:

I rolled up a large piece of foam and glued the ends together to make the cylinder. I made the eyes the same way I made Gonzo’s eyes, out of cut styrofoam balls. The nose is made of newspaper wrapped in duct tape covered in red fleece. For his hair, I cut the hair off of an old clown mask that we had and glued it to the front top of the cylinder. I bought two old oxford shirts at the thrift store and buttoned them together in the back and hot glued the shirts to the cylinder. I then put on an old lab coat, cuffed pants, and striped socks.

We had a great time posing in our Muppet Group Costume for pictures all night.
