This year I decided to dress up as my favorite Disney movie. The movie has a special meaning to me as it was the first movie I watched in my new house with my boyfriend (which we moved into last Halloween). Since it was the house the characters moved into and grew old in, it will always reminds me of that move in day. I wanted to go with a completely homemade costume.
I did not spend one extra penny on this costume, instead I used materials I had around my house. Two pieces of white foam poster board, yarn, a blue long sleeve tshirt, paint, a hat, and left over water balloons from this summer. I blew up each balloon, which was a challenge. Apparently water balloons aren’t as easy to blow up as real balloons but I didn’t know that when I chose them. I wanted the balloons to be more proportional to the house rather than use giant helium balloons. It took me a good 15 minutes to get the first one full and then realized….I had a long way to go.
Thankfully I eventually got the hang of it and didn’t pass out due to lack of oxygen. I individually safety pinned each balloon to my shirt as well as an old white baseball cap I had in my closet. I put the balloons over the entire hat so that when I tilted my head down all you see are balloons.
Next I sketched out a design of the house as best I could from a picture of it on the internet. I’m not much of an artist but I tried my best. I painted each side of the house and added details were needed. I then printed out a picture of 3 of the characters to add to the front porch and check out Dug the dog in the window! Last thing I did was punch holes in the side and string some yarn through. I also dangled yarn from some of the balloons and tied it to the chimney in the house. I also added some clouds to my arms and legs to make it look like i was in the sky.
I was surprised at how intact the costume remained throughout my whole night. Only a few balloons popped and one was because someone couldn’t resist the urge to pop it as I was walking by. Everyone like my Homemade Original Up Halloween Costume Idea.
