Coolest Outhouse Halloween Costume

Each year we try to come up with something unique for my kids on Halloween. I always give them several options and let them choose. This year my son Colby, age 12, decided he wanted to be inside an outhouse Halloween costume.

I was able to make this costume out of a refrigerator box. I did have to do some cutting to make the box the right size and to add the roof and seat/floor to the inside. After much trial and error, I found that the best way to hold everything together was using a high-temp glue gun. Once I had the shape, I cut out a moon from the front door. In order to get the woodgrain effect, I used contact paper to cover both the inside and outside of the box.

Fake legs were used by stuffing nylons and using a gathering stitch to make kneecaps. I also sponge painted lightly over the nylons with brown paint to give the effect of hairy legs. Of course, we added lots of details, such as an air freshener, toilet paper holder made out of a couple of screws and a small bungee cord, a rope pull cord to shut the door, a “push” light on the inside of the roof, hinges and a sign hanging from the front door saying “Occupied”.

The “toilet seat” was cut from a piece of white foam. To finish off the look, we just added a magazine, camo hat, plaid shirt, jeans around the ankles, and boots. Straps were then secured to the back and sides of the box and placed over his shoulders to allow him to carry the outhouse. A big tip is I used fluffy seat belt shoulder strap covers over the straps so it didn’t dig into his shoulders.

It was a big hit at his school “Monster Mash”. He also was a huge hit on Halloween night. We couldn’t even move from house to house, because everyone was stopping us and taking pictures. The light was by far the best “extra”. When it got dark outside, everyone could still see him on the inside. He loved all of the attention.
