I actually came to coolest-homemade-costumes.com to see if there were any cool fairy or butterfly costumes I could get ideas from, but when I came across a peacock DIY Halloween costume idea I thought “Yes! I have to do that!” So I found a place online that sold peacock feathers for only .35 cents a feather (which was the cheapest I could find), and looked up an easy no-sew tutu tutorial. After I bought all of my materials, I went to work…
I cut the base shape from some mounting board I had. Then I layered the feathers in a fan and continued each layer a little bit shorter than the one before it. After it was all full, I covered the base with black fabric and added elastic straps to make it easy and comfortable to wear. The tutu was even more simple… I just cut strips of tulle into 2-inch strips, and looped them around an elastic band that I measured to my waist. I just hand sewed the sequin band on top when I finished with the strips. That was the bulk of the project! Not hard at all!
I attached some more feathers to a headband that I had that had some black feathers on it already, bought a turquoise fitted tunic to wear under everything, pulled out my fishnets from last Halloween, and bought some bright green and turquoise eye makeup to finish the look. I absolutely LOVE the way it turned out!!! Now I have to find a way to top it next year :)
Where did you get your feathers? And how many did you get? What did the back look like?
