I was looking through this website for costume ideas for my 3 year old and came across Eric L.’s Coolest Homemade Chinese Take Out Costume. I loved it and started thinking of what other food would be good as a costume. My husband works for Southwest Airlines, and my daughter loves the pretzels they serve on flights, so I thought she could go as a pretzel bag. Which would be great, since I also have a 2 year old and she could be the smaller peanut bag.
I found some fabric that closely matched the color of the bags and started sewing. The costume is basically a pillowcase with holes cut in for the head and arms. I tried to honor the details and made sure the ends were pinked and crimped, and even included the bag’s back seam.
A cardboard liner is glued in across the top so the bag would stand up. I used acrylic paint to paint the peanut and pretzel background designs. After a little “jpegging”, the planes and lettering were printed, cut and glued on.
The girls were happy in their Pretzel and Peanuts Couple Costume, because they fit like dresses, and there wasn’t anything covering their faces or hands. They went to a party at Southwest’s headquarters and made a lot of people smile. We even got some requests for adult-sized versions for next year. Now that would be funny!
Really beautifully done! They also look pretty comfortable to wear. Great work!
I love this and was wondering if you would make a custom one and sell it to me? It would be for a 16 month old. I would love a pretzel bag! My email is josf21[at]hotmail[dot]com
I hope to hear from you!
