I love creating costumes based on characters from my childhood, so this year I decided to go for Sonic the Hedgehog – he was the first video game I’d ever played, on Sega Genesis.
It took a lot of glue, barbecue skewers in my hair, and thrift store rummaging to complete, but it was so worth it! My favorite part was painting an old white pair of shoes with acrylics I had on hand. The Sonic the Hedgehog Costume was comprised almost completely of thrift store items (shoes, socks, gloves, shirt, another shirt to cut and sew for Sonic’s belly, and tights).
The only things I had to buy were the hair dye and face paint! I think thrifty costumes are fun and show how creative and original a person can be without spending tons of money on a pre-made costume.
I think Sonic would be proud of my rendition… if only my boyfriend would have been Knuckles!
