Coolest Spongebob DIY Halloween Costume

This Spongebob DIY Halloween Costume is my own take on the ones I’ve seen here. Used a full-sized foam mattress pad, flipped over to the flat side. Spray painted in krylon’s “sun yellow”, glued together using Scotch Super 77 and Elmer’s Craft Bond (nail polish remover gets it off your fingers). Foam sheets bought at craft store made the eyes and eyelashes and belt. Felt sheets for the shirt and tie, storebought felt fabric for the shorts.

The hardest part about making this costume was measuring it to my daughter, to know where to put the mouth for her to see. Once that was established, I was able to make two foam “suspenders” out of extra foam strips, glued into place with the spray adhesive. That part was essential, and I worked through the mouth hole. Very tedious process!

The rest was cake. I used black mesh to cover the mouth hole, folded and refolded to be thicker and darker. Once he was done I trimmed the edges to be more “spongelike” and nipped at the front with a pair of pliers, and repainted the snipped parts. I used black acrylic paint to paint the inside edges of the mouth and to touch up the other black parts, that I’d originally drawn in with sharpie but they weren’t as crisp as I’d wanted them so I redid them and really like the painted outcome.

Underneath the costume she wore thermal underwear that I had dyed yellow, and a Spongebob tshirt in case she decides to take it off. The socks were a pair of my son’s, I put them over big cups to stretch them/hold them in place while I just painted the blue and red stripes with acrylics. Black shoes top it all off.
