My Spongebob DIY Halloween costume was made to make my daughter happy. I however did not want to do the traditional Spongebob. I thought “This is Halloween. Spongebob should be in costume”. So that’s what I did. I made a costume in costume.
First I looked up images of Spongebob looking for one that was appropriate. The one I found was of a dark Spongebob. When I saw it I fell in love.
Next having the image I made the box. This was done by cutting and folding shipping boxes to size and taping them together.
I then painted the entire box yellow and sketched my design onto the box. I used a black sharpie to outline my pencil then erased my lines. The rest was just filled in using various paints and markers.
Something to remember is that when dealing with an image of this size you don’t have to be perfect. Most flaws will disappear when viewing the whole product.
My biggest challenge was the view hole. I had wanted to use his pupils and just make them holes but they only came to my chest. I finally cut a hole in his hair and used cheese cloth tacked to the inside and painted black. This allowed me to see while still making the image mostly whole.
