I had to make a Totoro costume for a school play and it needed to be big. I used about 25 pool noodles, attached them together to form circles of different sizes and then threaded wire between the different layers making sure to leave some space for arm holes. Next using hot glue, I draped the frame with an old blanket and some white felt. Lastly I sewed a hat together out of some grey felt and hot glued the facial features onto it.
To top things off, we used a plastic foot to hold the microphone. This Homemade Totoro Costume took about 4.5 hours to make the costume and a lot of hot glue.
