This is Violet Beauregarde (the blueberry girl from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory). It’s one of my favorite costumes I’ve ever worn and one of the easiest to do!
The dress was a lucky thrift store find. I’m not much of a seamstress, so I decided to check around for a suitable dress. On my first trip out I found this (rather ugly) blue dress. In the film, Violet is actually wearing a pantsuit but I couldn’t afford to be picky and I wasn’t really sure how to make pants work with the inflatable part (up next). I altered the sleeves because originally they gathered tightly at the wrists and I didn’t care for that. I also purchased some buttons for the front of the dress to more closely match Movie Violet’s outfit. She is also wearing a red belt, which pops off as she begins to inflate. I just bought some red ribbon to tie around my waist so that it could be removed easily for inflation.
For the inflatable part, I purchased an inflatable basketball costume. I just wore the dress over the basketball, pressed the button, and voila. I also purchased blue tights and colored my skin blue with a heavy dusting of blue eye shadow!

What do you mean inflatable basketball costume?
Thanks for commenting :) if you Google “inflatable costume” and click on the shopping results, you will see many different options for costumes that would be perfect for this. You just need something that blows up nice and round. For example, there are inflatable m&m’s, sumo wrestlers, etc.
Why did you forget one of the key ingredients to the Violet costume?

I’m not sure what you mean by the nails. I guess I don’t remember that part?
What I meant was that you should have had blue nails to really help the costume work. BTW, do you do videos?
My sister is hoping to do a similar costume and this has given us some great ideas to work with. You looked very authentic!
hi…have just finished a violet outfit for my schoolteacher sister.for book week….. used a hoola hoop for the waist line and chicken wire.to make the ball..wading ..then put crushed purple stretch material over the top. .button is used cardboard and covered it..used purple tights and face make up… she looked pretty good…
