My daughter loves the newer Alice in Wonderland movies, especially Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. I’ve always been a costume hacker for the kids, looking at photos and figuring out what we have around the house that could be altered or tricked out to make the costume (actually for adult costumes too)!
For this one, I thought she was old enough to do some creative digging herself. I set her loose on the closets with a photo and her imagination. All I did was order the white face makeup, the hat and a cosplay wig (could have probably made our own top hat and done temp hair color, as she has a bob… but she also has a brain tumor and I’m sensitive about dyes and such).
The rest was all her. The pants were from an old pajama bottom, the white shirt and “jacket” were hand me downs from an aunt. Scarf was from my bin of “fancy” scarves. Same for the belt. She went into my sewing box and strung together a bunch of spools of thread. She also added some ribbons and measuring tape to just hang through the belt. The ankle boots were ones she already had, they worked perfectly.
Wonderful Mad Hatter costume, and she she got sooo many compliments from friends at school and neighborhood. No one could believe us that the costume was “mostly” home made.
