Cool Out of the Box Crayon Costume Idea

Here’s my “Brightest Crayon in the Box” Crayon costume idea. When it comes to bright ideas and thinking outside the box, I like to think I am pretty sharp and mostly *on point.* Life is too short to not be fun and colorful.

John Mayer said it best: “Life is like a box of crayons. Most people are the 8-color boxes, but what you’re really looking for are the 64-color boxes with the sharpeners on the back. I fancy myself to be a 64-color box, though I’ve got a few missing. It’s ok though, because I’ve got some more vibrant colors like periwinkle at my disposal. I have a bit of a problem though in that I can only meet the 8-color boxes. Does anyone else have that problem? I mean there are so many different colors of life, of feeling, of articulation.. so when I meet someone who’s an 8-color type.. I’m like, “hey girl, magenta!” and she’s like, “oh, you mean purple!” and she goes off on her purple thing, and I’m like, “no – I want magenta!”

Who knows, maybe this Halloween my crayon costume will flip the switch of my luck in meeting only the 8-color types to that of a “64-color box man.” Ha.

So this year, being the pun queen that I am, I wanted to showcase life’s vibrancy and my sheer joy of a good play on words. In the name of sustainability and repurposing a box that held cold-pressed juices (Ironic, considering that all the benefits of my juice cleanse are about to be negated by this junk food holiday), I painted the two main colors of a crayon box, cut up two pastel posted boards and taped to shape like a crayon, bought a dollar store plastic construction cone, an orange shirt from the local craft store and black fabric marker to make my crayon shirt. Violet.. er, viola! I’m the brightest crayon in the box! The costume’s grand total came to $13.72, which is close to what you’d pay for a box of 120 crayons! Color me happy! Orange you glad you read my contest submission? ;)

Crayon Costume

My sister and I wanted to have a crayon costume for Halloween. To do this we bought our favorite color felt from a craft store. Depending on size you just need enough to go around your body plus enough for a hat.

You also need black felt (about 1 yard) to spell out Crayola and whatever color you would like to be. Not being good with needles I pinned the back with safety pins from bottom to top. This is also easy to get in and out of. I also cut arm holes where it feels comfortable.

Cut out squiggly pattern and CRAYOLA as well as your color with the black felt. For example we were GORGEOUS GREEN and PRETTY PINK.

To make the hat we made a cylinder shape and fabric glued it. Attaching the letters also with fabric glue, you are all set to color with your crayon costume. (The picture of the other girl in the middle we used the same instructions and pattern but created a pixie stick rather than a crayon).

Total Spent: $15
