Cutest Couples Costume: Ash Ketchum and Pikachu

This  Ash Ketchum and Pikachu costume creation was an awesome experience! My boyfriend and I were Pikachu and Ash for the infamous Halloween at Ohio University. This was the perfect choice for a college party. Pokemon was a 90’s fab and everyone in college made a connection with us.

My boyfriend actually came up with this idea. I researched for what seemed like hours, I found blogs, pictures and had my own ideas. After we came up with a game plan we went out and bought everything to make it while I was home on the weekend. We hunted down a couple of the items, only because I’m a perfectionist and it had to be Ohio University worthy!

Our costumes were almost 100% home/ dorm made and I think it really gave us a special look! We definitely surpassed those who simply bought their costumes and made us that much more proud. I’m so glad we put the effort into this costume, it really paid off and made the night so much more memorable!

Pikachu:

Ears: A black head band, ears cut out of cardboard and duct taped yellow and the tips painted black, then duct taped unto my headband.

Face: Red lip liner

Outfit: plain yellow shirt (Jo-Ann’s), brown shorts (Kohl’s), yellow leggings (online), converse (and pink fuzzy socks to stay warm)

Tail: To make this extra sturdy I cut two tails out of cardboard and taped them together with a paint stirring stick between them and yellow duct taped it then painted brown on the bottom part of the tail. I had to duct tape this tail on me, and it was a wise choice! It didn’t move an inch!

Lightning bolts: Also cut out of cardboard and duct taped.

Ash Ketchum:

Hat: A plain white hat, painted sides and bill red and drew on the symbol.

Clothes: Bought a blue button down shirt (thrift store), a white shirt (thrift store). I traced the collar in the white, cut it out and sewed it on the blue shirt. For the sleeves, I cut the sleeves off the white shirt and cut the long blue sleeves off and then sewed the white on. Then, I duct tape the bottom of the shirt with yellow tape and cut pieces for (pretend) pockets. The gloves were bought at Walmart and we just cut 75% of the fingers off.

Pokeball: Plastic sphere piece (Jo-Ann’s). I painted the top half red and the bottom white then later after it dried I put the black line around the center and made the inner most circle.

The Best Part:

We had the best time looking for all the components and all of them were easily accessible from Walmart, or a craft store. Then I had a wonderful time sewing them together in my dorm room!

But, hands down the best part was people coming up and singing the Pokemon theme song at us, telling us that we were the “cutest couples costume” that they had seen, and yelling across the street “Pikachu and Ash!! Catch ’em all!”

The Hardest Part:

The hardest part was sewing the shirt on, I did it all freehand since I don’t have a sewing machine in my room. It was all worth it.  While we were walking around, people were telling us that we were their favorite costumes, asking us to take pictures with them (a total of 15 people took pictures with us) and asking how I made the costumes.
