Homemade Sapphire Necklace Costume

My daughter’s birthstone is a sapphire, but the type of gem can easily be changed by using a different color paper. (Purple=amythest, red=ruby, green=emerald, etc.)

We started with a piece of cardboard (18 x 13 inches, for a larger person use a bigger piece), then cut the corners to make a gem shape. Next use tape to fasten smaller pieces of cardboard (9 x 7 inches) to the center of the first piece. This gives the gem more dimension. Wrap the whole thing with solid blue wrapping paper. Optional: add glitter to make your gem sparkle! Make a second gem exactly the same way. Then attatch the two gems at the top with 2 pieces of rope to make a sandwich board. Use yellow or gold card stock cut into 1 inch strips to make 2 paper chains the same length as your arms. Fasten these to the top of the front gem with tape. To put on the costume, slide the sandwich board over your head & slip the last loop of each chain over your wrists.
