We always enjoy coming up with a family theme for Halloween and all of our family and friends anticipate each year what it will be. This year, it being the 50th anniversary for Disney’s “Mary Poppins” we thought what a wonderful, colorful, and memorable way to celebrate!
My mother always makes my son’s and daughter’s costumes homemade! She is unbelievably talented. She lives 12 hours away from us so whenever we see her in the spring, we always pick out our costume idea and patterns and then she has them made by the time Halloween comes around.
We decided that the kids would be the “fantasy” Mary Poppins and Bert so she recreated and embellished the costumes using a simple dress, suit coat, pants pattern. She always loves putting extra pizzazz on it – whether it be the red sequins going down each red stripe on my son’s jacket or rose garland around my daughter’s neckline and umbrella.
She was able to use a plain white Easter bonnet as well as a lace umbrella found in the wedding section of a craft store. She has such a great imagination and creates such beautiful costumes sometimes using the most ordinary things.
My daughter’s name is Mary Kate and she especially loves the costume because of the song “It’s a Jolly Holiday with Mary” My son loves to dance with his cane and do the “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” dance.
As for my husband and my costumes, we debated what we could be but finally decided the “other” or “reality”. Mary Poppins and Bert would be fun and that we could create it on our own with things we already had. This is great for someone like me who is not at all crafty like my mother – I can’t even sew a button! So, with the help of an old homecoming court suit jacket, show choir skirt, grandma’s old handbag and hat, and parrot beanie baby attached to my umbrella, my outfit was complete.
I had to find some berries and daisies to glue onto the hat – and I could do that all by myself. I also carried around a medicine bottle and large spoon like the song “Spoonful of Sugar” and everyone thought it was hilarious considering the fact that I am a pharmacist.
My husband liked the idea of being able to create his own with things he had in his wardrobe already. A little ash on the face and he’s a chimney sweep!
We’ve had some great family costumes in the past, but I don’t know if we will be able to top this one in the future! We think it’s “practically perfect in every way”.
