Prize-Winning Mad Hatter Costume for a Boy

My son absolutely LOVES Alice in Wonderland right now. So this year he wanted to go as his favorite character: the Mad Hatter. For this costume, I started where I do with every costume: local thrift stores. We purchased pants, an old jacket, a vest, a button-up shirt, a tie, and a blonde wig. We spray-painted the jacket and some lace green and gold, and then sewed the lace into the jacket.

Then we sewed the hand gloves using a tracing of my husband’s hand as a pattern. Next, we spray- painted the wig red and orange. We strung spoils of thread on a ribbon to make the sash. The hat was purchased at a Halloween store. We cut the pants off and hemmed them to make them shorts.

He won first place in several local costume contests and was even featured in the newspaper for our area. This one is his favorite costume yet!
