I have always wanted to be a mermaid for Halloween. I could never find a mermaid costume that I liked. They all looked so cheap and cheesy. So, I decided to make one myself. I began making my costume in July.
I started with the shoes (I have a bit of a shoe obsession). I took an old pair of silver pumps and individually, by hand, glued tiny aqua rhinestones to cover the entire shoe. They came out so beautiful and sparkly! Then I started working on the seashell bra. I used fabric glue to glue foam seashells to a regular nude bra. I painted the seashells purple and jazzed them up with rhinestones, pearls and actual seashells.
The skirt was the biggest challenge. It took me a while to decide how I would create it. Finally, I found a stretchy material which I sewed into a mermaid tail shape. Then I found an iridescent fabric in green and aqua. I cut out small triangles of each color and used fabric glue to adhere the pieces one by one. The end result was so beautiful and shimmery. I found the perfect wig and some great accessories like a starfish cuff bracelet and a flower for my hair.
