Sweet Little DIY Monsters Inc. Boo Costume for a Toddler

My daughter looks identical to Boo from Monsters Inc. I’m always hearing from everyone she look just like her especially with her pig tales. This year I had 3 choices and wasn’t planning on making them. It was between Little Mermaid, Alice In Wonderland or Boo, all of which me and her dad would have dressed accordingly with her. So I searched everywhere for a Boo costume but all I found were DIY Boo costumes so I decided I would do my best to make her costume. I have never sewn before nor have I ever made anything from scratch like this.

I looked online at different tutorials, got some ideas and decided what would be best to make a good costume. I honestly doubted I would finish this. I worked on it for a couple of weeks whenever I got a chance. I made 2 hoods, the first one didn’t work out so I tried a different way and it was perfect. I had some help with the body, like I said I have never sewn, so I asked my mom for help so she showed me with the body and from there I went on to finish the rest. I know I couldn’t have done it without her and I thank her so much. There was definitely a lot of trial and error but I was extremely happy how it came out.

I bought two purple fabrics and a gray, all were 2 yds, batting, white and black felt, 2 Styrofoam balls, pipe cleaners, mop, tan leggings. I sewed the body first, stuffed it with batting and sewed a few lines through it to give it the same look as the one on the movie. I then made the hood, I sewed up a regular hood and used a mop head for the hair. I cut it into pieces and sewed them on one by one then I had 3 pipe cleaners and twisted them together with a permanent black marker. I made the eyes, put them on the pipe cleaners and sewed it into the hood. I added Velcro to the back and on the hood to attach to the costume. I cut the leggings and used them as her selves the detail on the legging kind of reminded me of the arms on Boo’s costume. It was the closet thing I could find. Even under her costume she was dressed as Boo, pink shirt, purple pants, pink hair accessories.

I know Halloween isn’t till the 31st but my family goes to a camp site which every weekend in October they do a Halloween thing. All the cabins are decorated, people handing out candy and kids trick or treating. We went this weekend and she wore her costume for the first time. Everyone loved it she got so much attention people asking to take her picture, people yelling out Boo. Saying how much she looks just like her. I had people ask if I made it and told me it came out really good. I was so proud of myself.

I have never done anything like this but I was so determined to do this for my daughter but honestly didn’t think it was going to happen but I didn’t want to give up. I told myself I don’t care how it comes out I’m finishing it. I did and I love it and so does she. She loved her costume so much I really thought she wasn’t going to wear it since when I was making it she didn’t want to try anything on for me but she wore it all night and rocked it!
